How does a lift control cabinet work?

The control cabinet is the "brain of your lift"! Indeed, it consolidates and analyses component data, as well as the various user commands. It then controls and activates the different parts of the lift, in compliance with safety regulations. OCTÉ will show you the working principle of this component that controls the movement of the car inside the hoistway! Visit our online store to see all of our VERSO-branded models of synchronous, asynchronous and hydraulic control cabinets, which are compatible with all new and old lift models.

Where is the control cabinet located?

The control cabinet is also called the lift “controller”. Invisible whilst riding in the lift car, it is located above or below the shaft, in the machine room. This means that the cabinet can only be accessed by a servicing and maintenance technician during a technical inspection of the equipment and all of the features related to proper operation and safety. If your lift does not have a dedicated machine room, then the OCTÉ-manufactured cabinet will be installed directly on the landing. This cabinet will be locked to prohibit tampering or acts of vandalism.

→ What role does the control cabinet play in the lift operation?

The motherboard inside the cabinet controls all lift car movements. It performs two separate actions:

Receiving the information that is sent whenever a user presses a button: to call the lift, select a floor or to request door opening. Sending the instructions matching the user requests to set the car in motion: door opening, motor start-up, etc. Therefore, the control cabinet enables 24/7 operation of the lift, without the need for human intervention. Thanks to the multiple sensors and safety devices (over-speed governor, safety gear, landing door locks, etc.), safety is always guaranteed!

Core components of a lift control cabinet

A technician needs to access the control cabinet, so its interface must be clear and user-friendly. It should include:

a touchscreen that serves as a programming interface

an SD card system for performing updates, and a port for connecting the cabinet to a PC

a built-in battery for remote alarm calls and emergency lighting inside the car, should a power failure occur

a controller for the landing door shunts, such that the technicians can work on the motor control unit to set the lift car in motion

variable frequency drive or contactors, depending on the model to be operated

To fulfil its role as the lift's “brain”, the control cabinet features a microprocessor that is capable of managing multiple connections to all of the lift components:

signalling and command systems (display, buttons,)

safety devices, including the over-speed governor, tensioner pulleys, lighting, etc.

systems for locking the doors (switches) on the landing doors,

safety gear systems (safety gears)

drive systems (machine, hydraulics unit, etc.)

When choosing your control cabinet, you must state the power required to drive your traction system. OCTÉ offers a huge range of VERSO control cabinet models starting from 5.5kW of power.

You can browse all of the VERSO control cabinets which OCTÉ sells, either in our online shop or in our catalogue. In addition to the various types of control cabinet (synchronous, hydraulic, asynchronous, 2-speed, etc.), OCTÉ also offers high levels of customisation to meet the specific requirements of your lift!
